Tiger girls fifth at state

6A water polo — NHS bests Tigard 13-7 and clobbers Sunset 13-2 to cap off a rebuilding year on a high note


CORVALLIS — A week after getting hammered by eventual state runner-up Lincoln in the state quarterfinals, the Newberg girls water polo team rebounded with a pair of wins in the consolation bracket to claim fifth place Friday and Saturday in the state championships at the Osborne Aquatic Center. by: GARY ALLEN - Group hug - The NHS girls water polo team celebrates early Saturday morning after claiming the fifth place trophy following a 13-2 drubbing of Sunset.

Elizabeth Andrews and Grace Brockie scored four goals and recorded two assists apiece to lift the Tigers to a 13-7 win over Tigard Friday.

Victoria Johnson played distributor, doling out seven assists to go along with one goal. Tia Lattanzo had one goal and four assists, while Katrina Reichenbach, Alena Lidey Lam and Rachael Seymour scored one goal apiece. Lidey Lam also made six blocks playing three quarters in goal.

Newberg went out with a bang Saturday morning, thrashing Sunset 13-2 to finish fifth.

The Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one quarter and were in cruise control by the fourth quarter having established an 11-1 advantage.

“I think the girls just played tough,” head coach Jim McMaster said. “(Saturday) morning they definitely came to play.”

Johnson, who along with Andrews was named to the all-tournament second team, scored three goals and handed out four assists in the win over Sunset.

Reichenbach scored one goal and swiped “I felt we could have done better, but our team is all sophomores and we have two juniors,” Johnson said. “With that age group, I feel like we did so good. We took fifth overall in state and that’s just incredible to me. I really am so happy we made it this far.”

Andrews had a team-high five assists to go along with two goals in the fifth-place match. Brockie, Lidey Lam and Lattanzio posted two goals apiece, with Reichenbach and Remy Saunders adding one apiece. Brockie earned honorable mention accolades for the tournament.

“Already this year we went from losing a lot in the summer to now taking fifth at state,” Johnson said. “It’s incredible to see how much we’ve grown as a team. We’ll have some games where it will be like a two-man show, I guess, and then other games, like (Saturday) morning, we’re all working together.”
