GFU volleyball camps on tap next week

George Fox University will host a pair of volleyball camps for players entering grades 6-12 Aug. 5-8 at the Wheeler Sports Center. The morning camp for middle school players will run from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by the high school camp from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Cost for the 6-8 camp is $90 for each camper or $70 each for multiple campers from the same family. The cost for the 9-12 camp is $100 per camper or $80 each for multiple campers from the same family. Checks may be made out either to head coach Steve Grant or to “Bruin Volleyball Camp” and returned along with the registration form to Grant at George Fox University, 414 N. Softball camp set for Aug. 8 at George Fox

George Fox University will host a one day girls softball camp, with four different options from which players may choose, on Aug. 8 at the Morse Athletic Complex softball field and the Miller Gym. The first option is a hitting and fielding camp for infielders and outfielders ages 12 and up, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with an hour break for lunch. Campers should bring their own lunches. Cost is $50. The second option is a catchers’ hitting and fielding camp for girls of all ages, running from 12:45 to 5 p.m. Campers should have lunch before they arrive. Cost is $50. A third option is for pitchers of all ages who also would like hitting instruction. This camp runs from 12:45 to 5:45 p.m. and campers should eat lunch before they arrive. Cost is $50. The fourth camp is for pitchers only, all ages welcome, and runs from 3 to 5:45 p.m. Cost is $35. Each athlete should bring her own bat, glove, helmet and catching gear appropriate for camp. Players should wear athletic shorts, sweats or softball pants (no jeans), T-shirts, and bring both cleats and tennis shoes, as activities will take place both indoors and outdoors. The registration deadline is Friday and all campers who register by then will receive a camp T-shirt. Softball tryouts in Canby

The 16A Wildcats, an ASA softball team out of Canby, will hold tryouts for the upcoming season Aug. 5 at Canby High School. Field players will tryout from 5:45 to 8:30 p.m. and pitchers and catchers will go from 7:45 to 8:30 p.m. The team will play a fall schedule of two to three tournaments and resume play in June 2014. Players who are offered and accept a position on the team will be required to pay a $150 non-refundable deposit that will count toward any team fees. This year’s Wildcats team is currently competing at ASA Western Nationals in Spokane, Wash.
