A taste of the bard at Chehalem Cultural Center

Culture — In one hour, four actors and six scenes, Portland Center Stage will present Alls Fair in Love & Shakespeare

Romeo and Juliet, Beatrice and Benedick, Hamlet and Ophelia, Othello and Desdemona. These couples are perhaps William Shakespeare’s best known and will take the stage in six different scenes during a Portland Center Stage performance March 12 at the Chehalem Cultural Center.

“The March 12 event is part of a tour that Portland Center Stage is doing to promote the opening of their production of Shakespeare’s Othello,” said Caleb Thurston, CCC programming coordinator. “We have been working with them for some time to share programming and this will be our first opportunity to collaborate.”

The performance, “All’s Fair in Love & Shakespeare,” is being held at local area schools, community centers and libraries.

“(It) seeks to help everyone in our community celebrate the literary legacy of Shakespeare and make his words more accessible by giving participants an intimate peek into his works,” said Claudie Fisher, public relations and publications manager for PCS.

But Fisher said they also hope it will spark a larger interest in seeing the full production of “Othello” opening April 5.

At the CCC, the hour-long performance will feature four actors playing a variety of roles.

“This is a delightful, high-spirited, hour-long show that celebrates the master of the language of love,” she said. “It’s been created for audiences of all ages.”

It’s also been designed to work in any venue, she said, which will be helpful as it’s being performed in the Parrish Gallery.

“All we need is a few chairs and a small playing space,” Fisher said. “The intimate staging puts all the focus on Shakespeare’s characters and gives our talented performers a chance to shine.”

The performance will start at 7 p.m. March 12.
