OSU Master Food Preservers program begins April 4
Continuing education Family and Community Education Program trains volunteers on food preservation, benefits and continuing education
Food preservation better known as canning, pickling or freezing is one way to keep the shelf supplied throughout the year. Plus, food preservation can combat illness and food waste. In order to better understand how food preservation works and its benefits, Oregon State University Extension Service Family and Community Master Food Preservers program will soon provide training for volunteers. To attend the training sessions and become a Master Food Preserver an application must be submitted by March 7 to extension offices in Marion, Polk and Yamhill counties. Registration for the program is $85.
The Master Food Preservers program is 48 hours of training through OSU tested food safety and preservation. Once trained, volunteers are asked to help others learn about food preservation with at least 40 hours of service to county residents.
The Salem Health Community Health Education Center will begin training April 4 at the Wellness Kitchen, 939 Oak St. in Salem. At the completion of training volunteers will continue to receive up to date information on local food safety.
Im excited about developing a Master Food Preserver Program because it will help us help many more families than we could do by ourselves, and it creates communities of people that know how to safely prepare and preserve fresh food at home, said Tonya Johnson, an OSU Extension Service instructor.
The OSU Extension Service has been educating community members for more than 100 years. Its mission, according to a press release, is to provide research based knowledge that is useful for people. The Family and Community Education Program is an independent nonprofit organization and it began in 1980 with volunteers from Linn, Benton, Lane and Marion counties.
