Combining myth, print in one exhibit

Seattle artist makes first trek to GFU, explores mythology with art

So it makes sense that his upcoming show at the George Fox University Minthorne Gallery will combine both.

“I’ve explored various forms of printmaking; right now I’m working with rust prints,” Fisher said.

His show, titled “Heroes Before Us,” explores the myth of Zeus and the center of the world he created. But it was also inspired by Joseph Campbell.

“I’ve drawn from Joseph Campbell’s description of the hero’s journey, so all pieces have ties to that,” he said.

Fisher said this will be his first show in the area, as his gallery and home are in Seattle.by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Opening soon -- Seattle artist Brian Fisher will host his first solo show at the George Fox University Minthorne Gallery opening Jan. 23. His pieces, including Devining Center, focus on mythology.

“It’s a little hard to travel with a body of work,” he said. “This is actually my first solo show, so this is actually a pretty big thing for me.”

He said Minthorne Gallery Director Tim Timmerman got in contact with him several years ago after running across his blog.

“I did a bunch of work on the subject of twins, he wrote to me and I’ve followed his work (since then),” Fisher said. “About this time last year he asked if I was interested in doing a solo show.”

Timmerman said he was looking at Fisher’s work and enjoyed that he worked in multiple mediums.

“And there’s a very strong graphic design quality to his work,” Timmerman said. “It really comes full circle to what we do in our department. And I like that he draws from very traditional historical concepts.”

Fisher said he also intends to teach a monotype class while in Newberg for the show opening.

“I’m looking forward to that as well,” he said.

“Heroes Before Us” opens with an artist talk at 4:10 p.m. Jan. 23 in Hoover 105, with a reception following at 5 p.m.
