Ballot Measure could repeal licenses for illegal immigrants

State government — Referendum would block implementation of Senate Bill 833

The Oregon Elections Division announced in October that a petition for Referendum 301 has qualified for the November 2014 ballot, according to an unofficial signature count completed Oct. 18.

The referendum blocks Senate Bill 833 from going into effect Jan. 1. The bill would allow Oregon residents who cannot prove they are in the United States legally to obtain a temporary Oregon driver’s license. The Legislature approved the law this summer.

Chief petitioners submitted a total of 70,973 unverified signatures by the Oct. 4 referendum deadline.

The Elections Division accepted 69,208 signatures for verification. A statistical sampling method determined that 58,291 signatures were valid. A total of 58,142 valid signatures were required to place the measure on the ballot. Official signature verification results are expected to be announced this week.
