60 Years of conservation to be celebrated
McMINNVILLE The Yamhill Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will host Owen Wozniak, project manager for The Trust for Public Land (TPL), as the featured speaker at its annual dinner. Wozniak has been a partner in one of the districts recent projects to establish a conservation easement on the Koelling Property near Yamhill. A silent auction begins at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the McMinnville Community Center, with the dinner and featured speaker to follow.
AHA Heartsaver, first-aid, CPR and AED classes set
For anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in first-aid, CPR and AED to meet a job or other regulatory requirements, one will soon be available. Physical participation is required in order to pass. Competent completion of the course earns the student a two-year certification card. Students will be taught first-aid basics, medical emergencies and injury emergencies. The class is for ages 12 and up. Steve Hamilton will be teaching the 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. course Nov. 16 in the White Oak Room at the Chehalem Park and Recreation District headquarters, 125 S. Elliott Road. Oregon Humanities call for submissions
New traffic controllers and timing upgrades
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), in conjunction with the city of Newberg, installed new traffic signal controllers along Highway 99W last week. Along with controller upgrades, ODOT has updated the signal timing system. Before the change, pedestrians would see a walk signal during the day without pushing the pedestrian button. Now, pedestrians must push the button to see a walk indication.
City of Newberg seeks volunteers
The city of Newberg is looking for applicants to serve on a number of committees and commissions. There are multiple positions still available. The budget committee has four vacancies, the Citizens Rate Review Committee has three openings, the planning commission has three vacancies and the Traffic Safety Commission has four positions open. Terms will run from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2016. Applications are being accepted until 4:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at city hall.

Coping with the holidays, the loss of a loved one
Get me through the Holidays: 10 Strategies for Coping with Loss, is a one-hour presentation to help those who are grieving discover practical and meaningful ways to cope during the holidays. Coping strategies can be used for personal holidays, such as birthdays and anniversaries. The event is scheduled for 10 to 11 a.m. Nov. 9 at Providence Newberg Medical Center in the Dundee/Sherwood conference rooms.
Rare Plant Watch Program to be introduced
McMINNVILLE Erin Gray, co-chairman of the Native Plant Society of Oregons (NPSO) rare and endangered plants committee and an ecologist for the Institute for Applied Ecology, will soon introduce the NPSOs Rare Plant Watch program. Learn about how to become involved in citizen science and conservation through searching for and documenting rare Oregon plants. The event begins at 7 p.m. Nov. 21 in the Carnegie Room in the McMinnville Public Library.
