GFU history professor hosts book reading, signing Sept. 20

Promoting his book, ‘Cousins at War: A Civil War Novel,’ Ralph Beebe, professor of history emeritus at George Fox University, will host a book reading and signing 3 p.m. Friday in the second-floor lounge of the Hoover Academic Building. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.

Japanese culture, history and art discussed over lunch

Lunch and history collide starting at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Chehalem Cultural Center. Celebrating Japanese culture, history and art, the bring-your-lunch event begins with a Sumi-e painting demonstration, followed by a noon presentation by the Peace Ambassadors discussing Japan’s history during World War II and personal survival stories of the Hiroshima atomic bombing. At 1 p.m. there will be a Koto performance.

Blues, brews and chili cook-off

To support the Newell House Museum and the Butteville Academy, there will be a chili cook-off from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Newell House near the Champoeg State Heritage Area. Admission is $8 for adults and $4 per child. Admission includes a sample of each entry, corn bread and salad. Entertainment will be provided by local artist Nate Macy.
