June 18 letters to the editor

Community bands from Newberg and McMinnville really put on a show

To the editor:

And the bands played on!

Those of us who were present at the Newberg Community Band performance on the evening of June 5 at Bauman Auditorium were moved by the melodic music of the McMinnville Second Winds Community Band, directed by Mark Williams.

They had come on the invitation of Dick Elliott, the well-known director of the Newberg Community Band. (Incidentally, Dick is retiring as the choir director at Newberg First United Methodist Church after 33 years of faithful service).June 18 letters to the editor

In typical generosity, Dick let the McMinnville Second Winds have the first part of the program There was a blaze of red on the stage as the players wore red shirts/blouses and black pants. The music included “Circle in a Square” by Ed Kiefer and “Solas Ane” (Yesterday’s Joy) by Samuel Hazo.

The second part of the program was by the Newberg Community Band.

They had purple shirts and brown pants. They played selections from the “Sound of Music” by Rogers and Hammerstein, among the evening’s repertoire.

The finale of the evening was a joint band rendition of “The Washington Post” by John Philip Sousa. It was a fitting tribute to a great composer and a lively close to the evening’s program.

Thanks to both volunteer bands for a relaxing and musically inspiring evening. May this be an annual event. It would be great to see local school band directors and students attending and learning from these events.
