Owner seeks to help teens fight breakouts, help Baby Boomers fight wrinkles

When a teenage girl comes to Courtney Hein looking to put an end to persistent acne breakouts, she knows exactly where they're coming from.

Having been plagued with the same issue as a teen, Hein has dedicated her career to helping men and women of all ages, but especially young people, take care of their skin and take a proactive approach to all types of skin care, whether it's wrinkles or acne.

"That's the first thing people see and you feel it and it hurts; it's painful physically and psychologically," Hein said. "So, I like to start people out when they're young, educate them, build those young girls' self-esteem up and let them know that acne isn't forever, scarring is, this is how you take care of it."

After she set up shop in Newberg about four years ago at Foothills Drive and North College Street, Hein recently moved Luminous Boutique Spa to the heart of downtown at 106 N. Howard St.

While seeking to take part in the evolution of Newberg's downtown, Hein is also adding more space to her business where she offers a friendly, relaxed environment for a variety of skin care services, including facials, tanning, waxing and massage therapy.

Growing up in Newberg, Hein explained that her path on this career started as she tried to combat her own acne problems in her youth, studying up on a multitude of products and methods to curb breakouts.

However, years later, she's also well-versed in how skin issues later in life, like wrinkles and sun damage, can have a similarly emotional impact on adults.

"A lot of women come in and they say that they see someone different as they're aging – they don't even recognize themselves in the mirror," Hein said. "So, my philosophy for them is 'I'm trying to help you look how you feel.'"

While she moved downtown to be part of the developing culture she sees in that part of Newberg, she noted that she is not a "fluff and buff" spa for tourists to stop in for a day and never come back.

"I'm here for the residents, the people that I grew up with, the people that are here every day," she said. "They can come in and feel comfortable and take a load off and be relaxed all while having their beauty needs taken care of."

Opening in the downtown location May 2, Luminous Boutique is open by appointment Tuesday through Saturday with walk-ins welcome on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. More information on services is available at www.luminousboutiquespa.com/.
