County firefighters join battle against Rowena

Seven local firefighters assisted in the fight against the Rowena Fire near The Dalles last week.

On Aug. 6, the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office requested assistance in fighting the fire from area fire agencies after Gov. John Kitzhaber declared the Conflagration Act.

The act recognizes that lives and property are at risk due to a fire and that the threat exceeds the firefighting capabilities of local firefighting forces. It allows outside help to join in the effort.

Two engines, Brush-20 and Brush-21, responded from Newberg. Each engine carried three local firefighters. One Dundee firefighter also left to assist in the fire on board an engine from the Dayton fire district.

This is the third time area agencies have been asked for their assistance this fire season and the second time that Yamhill County has joined the effort, according to Dundee Fire Chief John Stock of the Yamhill County Fire Defense Board.

The seven fire personnel returned Saturday evening after spending their time protecting structures from fire damage.

The Rowena fire began Aug. 5 and had spread to more than 2,600 acres by Friday morning. More than 400 personnel are involved in the firefighting effort, deemed the top priority in the state based on its potential to destroy buildings.
