Newberg missionary succumbs in Florida

Carries Nichols dies Wednesday morning after suffering an apparent stroke in the Caribbean

Newberg missionary Carrie Nichols died Thursday day morning while in hospice care in South Florida.

Nichols, wife of longtime Newberg Church of the Nazarene pastor Ed Nichols, suffered an apparent stroke July 27 on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, where the couple was taking a break from their missionary work on the nearby island of Dominica.

After determining Nichols had a large bleed on the right side of her brain, doctors chose to transport her to Lawnwood Regional Hospital in Fort Pierce, Fla., July 29. Nichols

At the urging of her doctor there, the Nichols’ four children — Josh, Abram, Angela and Kara — flew to Florida the next day to be with their parents.

After the siblings returned home, it was decided that Nichols would be taken off life support at 10 a.m. Wednesday. According to reports from the family at the websites www.caringbridge.org and www.mytoughmama.com, Nichols died “peacefully” Thursday as the sun was rising.

“We are all thankful my Mom is no longer in pain,” daughter Angela Friesen posted on the CaringBridge site.

The two websites were created to update friends and family on Nichols’ condition, as well as to provide them the opportunity to give moral and financial support to the family.

In addition to www.mytoughmama.com, Josh Nichols also created a page on Facebook, “In Loving Support of Carrie Nichols,” which has since been changed to “In Loving Memory of Carrie Nichols.”

The response from friends, extended family and the Newberg community on all three sites has been significant.

As of Thursday evening, the number of visits to Nichols’ CaringBridge site had nearly reached 5,000, while the group for the Facebook page had reached 244 members, who left more than 80 posts featuring memories and pictures of Nichols, as well as condolences.

“No words can totally describe her but the two that came to me were joy and love,” Cheryl Johnson posted on Facebook Thursday. “She showed love every day to all around her. And the joy she shared with all of us is quite a gift. Not everyone gets a gift like Carrie and we are all so very blessed that we did. She will always be in my heart. The earth is missing an angel today.”

Memorial and funeral service times have not yet been determined, but will be posted on CaringBridge and www.mytoughmama.com.

“God is carrying us through this and he will continue to do so,” Friesen posted on CaringBridge. “It doesn't change the fact that we are missing a very important part of our family. We do appreciate your continued prayers and support as we walk this journey.”
