Program searches for prospective volunteers
The Yamhill County AARP Driver Safety program is looking for people interested in volunteering as an instructor for the program.
Instructors work to improve safety in driving through safety awareness, updating state traffic laws and helping to plan for the future as it relates to driving, according to a statement from the program.
Learn to brew your own beer
The Newberg Public Library will offer a free informational class on home brewing beer next week. Tom Irwin, a local home brewer, will discuss the supplies and equipment needed, as well as talk about the various ingredients a home brewer uses to brew various types of beer. He will also take participants through the actual process of brewing. The class is designed to be interactive, with attendees encouraged to ask questions.
The event is set for 7 p.m. Aug. 14. No pre-registration is required. For more information, call the library at 503-538-7323.
Newberg Community Band to host free summer concert
The Newberg Community Band will host a free summer concert starting at 7 p.m. Aug. 14 at the George Fox University amphitheater. Music will include audience favorites, marches and other genres. For more information, visit www.newbergcommunityband.com.
Harvest Fest on tap Aug. 16 and 17
McMINNVILLE The Yamhill County Harvest Fest runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 16-17 at the Yamhill Valley Heritage Center. Working blacksmiths will be on site, as well as a kids area with hands-on activities, music, food and museum tours. Admission is $5 and kids younger than 12 years old are free. Walk to raise money for local pregnancy centers
Pregnancy Counseling and Information Center is hosting Laps for Life 2013, an event that will raise money to fund the organizations pregnancy centers in McMinnville and Newberg.
The walk will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. Aug. 23 at the East entrance of Wortman Park on Patio C in McMinnville.
A lunch will be provided for all participants.
Volunteers asked to give blood
The American Red Cross invites all eligible members of the public to donate blood from 1:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 7 at Zion Lutheran Church, 301 S. River St.
Volunteers are asked to schedule an appointment by calling the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS or visiting www.red crossblood.org. The sponsor code for the blood drive is NewbergCommunity.

Public invited to NHS Golden Gathering
The Newberg High Schools annual gathering of graduates from the 1930s to 1964 will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 10 in the cafeteria at A-dec Inc., 2602 Crestview Drive. Refreshments will be provided. Donations to cover expenses should be made payable to The Golden Gathering in care of Janise VanFleet, 123 N.W. 25th, McMinnville 97128.
Chehalem Valley Chamber Hosts Candidates Forum Aug. 12
The Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Candidates Forum for Senate District 13 and House Districts 24 and 25. The event will be held at noon Aug. 12 at Friendsview Retirement Community, 1301 Fulton St. in Newberg. The event, sponsored by PGE is being held to better inform citizens about the individuals running for elected office. The Forum is open to organizations members; the general public may attend as guests.
Running for Senate District 13 are candidates Kim Thatcher and Ryan Howard. Running for House District 24 is incumbent, Jim Weidner and his challenger Ken Moore. Running for House District 25 is Bill Post and Chuck Lee.
The format is straight forward with all candidates for both positions being asked to respond to approximately five to seven questions. Each candidate will have an opportunity to make brief opening and closing remarks.
