Community shelter in need of a makeover

Housing ministry — Love INC will have to purchase new beds following bed bug infestation

In order to move forward and reopen the Newberg Community Shelter following a bed bug infestation, Love INC (In the Name of Christ) is raising funds to replace its bunk beds, bedding and window treatments.

The shelter was closed July 22 and is scheduled to reopen Sept. 1, but with a cost of $700 to replace one bunk bed, Love INC is reaching out to its supporters for help.

Love INC may also have to change its intake process and explore whether it will have to hire new staff to handle new procedures.

Staff at the shelter were able to secure temporary accommodations for the women staying there when it was forced to close, but the solutions were far from ideal.

“This experience convicted me deeply that this town needs this shelter,” new executive director Jodi Hansen said. “But, we are going to have to change much about the way we operate to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
