Let the party begin

The spectacle of the Old Fashioned Festival returns Thursday for another year

The Old Fashioned Festival signals the close of the festival season in Newberg, but it won’t end without a bang, quite literally as the carnival concludes with perhaps the largest fireworks display in the area Saturday evening.

This year’s theme is “Feelin’ Groovy” and events begin Thursday at 4 p.m., with the carnival at Renne Field kicking off the evening’s events. The always popular Kids Parade starts at 6 p.m. from Sixth and Howard streets and concludes 10 blocks later at the Newberg School District office, where Nap’s Thriftway will have beverages and snacks ready for all participants. by: GARY ALLEN - Fido fashion - The Chehalem Park and Recreation District's dog costume contest Thursday is always a favorite of festival-goers.

Thirty minutes later, at the Renne Tennis Courts, the dog show begins where owners dress up their pets for the annual costume contest. The queen’s coronation will follow in Memorial Park at 8 p.m. choosing one of three princesses — Marthadina Russell, Stephanie Apple and Devin Beeson — to reign over the festival and represent Newberg in other area events.

Friday is filled with Disc Golf events, the Scout Expo, multiple dance team performances on the Children’s Stage and concerts throughout the evening.

Lead by the Newberg High School cheerleaders, 2014 national champions, Saturday kicks off with the 10 a.m. Grand Festival Parade. Departing from Meridian Street, the parade proceeds north to Second Street, then west to Main Street, back east on Third Street and finishing at Memorial Park on Blaine Street.

Following the parade, the Rotary Breakfast (which starts at 6 a.m.) continues in Memorial Park until noon. For the third year, the geocaching event will challenge enthusiasts once again to retrieve clues from locations around town in search of caches. Participants should gather at the main stage at 1:30 p.m. for the hunt.

The midway in Memorial Park and carnival at Renne Field also continue Saturday offering assorted rides, treats, art and vendors.

The firework show lights up at 10 p.m. from Renne Field before the festival comes to a close Sunday.

The final day’s schedule is packed full in the morning. With the 5k run warming up bright and early at 8 a.m. Sunday, Day 2 of the pancake breakfast opens simultaneously from 7 a.m. to noon. Also starting at 8 a.m., the car show runs until 3 p.m. on Sixth Street near Renne Field. Antique and classic cars will be joined by more than 30 antique fire trucks at noon.

As is tradition, the Hymn Sing at 4:30 p.m. marks the conclusion of Old Fashioned Festival.
