Telephone scam impersonating sheriff's office to collect money
Public safety Posing as a 'constable,' callers attempt to collect money over the phone
The Yamhill County Sheriffs Office, along with the McMinnville Police Department, is investigating recent fraud attempts to collect fees from callers.
Victims have reported receiving calls from Constable James Clark who informs them of missed jury duty summons. The caller would then indicate a warrant had been issued for the victims arrest and requested payment for fees associated with failure to appear. The caller would then transfer them to Collections Deputy Joe Morelli to collect payment via credit card.
I want the citizens of Yamhill County to know that these calls are fraudulent in nature and they should never give out personal or bank account information over the phone, said Capt. Tim Svenson. We work hard to build trust with our citizens and when someone tries to represent our office in this manner it is very disheartening.
The YCSO does not employ any constables and stated they would not attempt to collect payment over the phone.
Anyone who has received a similar call should file a report with local law enforcement.
