Alzheimer caregiver support group in place

Friendsview — Group meets twice a month to provide resources, aid for those who are caregivers

Thanks to Kathryn Saunders, Newberg now has a support group to serve caregivers of loved ones that have Alzheimer’s or dementia.

When Saunders began working at Friendsview Retirement Community a year ago, she began noticing there was a need for a support group and a space for people to process what caregiving is like for a loved one with Alzheimers.

The support group, through the Alzheimer’s Association Oregon chapter based in Portland, is open to the community. The first meeting was held April 10 and two people attended, Saunders said.

“At our first meeting there was a woman who has been taking care of her husband for a long time,” she said. “She knows a lot of information about doctors and medicine and was able to help the husband of a wife who was recently diagnosed. It is a way to help neighbors take care of each other.”

Saunders is a trained social worker and has been training for the past few months with the Alzheimer’s Association as well.

The support group was designed and developed to meet the emotional, educational and social support needs of caregivers of people who have Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Saunders said she plans to develop helpful coping methods and encourage personal, physical and emotional health for caregivers.

The support group, lead by Saunders, will meet every from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. every second and fourth Thursday of the month at the Freindsview Springbrook Meadows Community Center.

For more information, call Saunders at 503-537-2288.
