Brierley leaves planning, building department


City government — Barton Brierley takes position in California, Steve Olson will serve as director in interim

After 16 years with the city of Newberg, Barton Brierley, planning and building director, is packing up and moving to California. Vacaville to be specific.by: GARY ALLEN - Seeking greener pastures - Barton Brierley, longtime city of Newberg planning and building director, served his last day March 21. Brierley took a similar position in Vacaville, Calif. Associate planner Steve Olson will take over the position in the interim.

Brierley took a position as community development director with the city of Vacaville and served his last official day in Newberg on March 21. He begins work in Vacaville April 14.

“It was just a really great opportunity for me and my family,” he said of the new position. “Vacaville’s a wonderful community and it was just a really good opportunity and a chance to take on some new challenges.”

Brierley said he found out about the position after being contacted by a recruiter a few months ago. He will have the same basic duties in the California town halfway between Sacramento and San Francisco, but with a different title.

Steve Olson, Newberg’s associate planner, will take over Brierley’s position in the interim while the city mounts a search for a permanent replacement.

“Newberg’s been a fabulous place and I really like the city,” Brierley said. “I’ve been involved in the community a lot, I’ve gotten a chance to talk with a lot of people and meet a lot of the community and make some great friends.”
