Chipotle plans move into Walmart complex

Business — Restaurant expected to be up and running by late summer, along with other shops

SHERWOOD — Chipotle Mexican Grill is the newest tenant to sign up for space in Parkway Village, the complex that will soon feature Walmart as its anchor tenant.

Matt Langer, spokesman for Langer Family LLC, owners of the land the complex sits on, said the restaurant will likely will open this summer. It will be located immediately to the right of the soon-to-be-built arched entrance along Langer Farms Parkway, directly across the street from Sleep Country USA.

“All the small shops will be open the same time Walmart opens in late summer,” said Langer, who also serves on the Sherwood City Council. He said it took several months of negotiations to get the Denver-based Mexican restaurant chain at the site.

Chipotle was founded in 1993 by Steve Ells when he opened his first restaurant in a former Dolly Madison Ice Cream store. It features tacos and large burritos, pushing a tagline of “Food with Integrity.”

The restaurant will join other already-named tenants including Starbucks, Pacific Dental, Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches, a UPS Store and Vivid Nails. Those stores will comprise about 10,000 square feet in the new complex. Parkway Village is being developed by Gramor Development, whose officials have said they expect the entire complex to bring about 600 new jobs to town.

The announcement last May that Walmart would open in Sherwood caused a fair amount of controversy, resulting in two failed attempts to collect enough signatures to place a recall effort against Langer on a city ballot.

Meanwhile, Langer said construction of the 150,000-square-foot Walmart superstore is moving along rapidly.

“By the time school starts, there should be a lot of stuff open over there,” he said.

Langer said he thinks many residents will be pleased with the announcement that Chipotle is coming to town, noting the chain has a reputation for organic, green and sustainable products.

“I think that will make a lot of people happy,” he said.
