Advocacy classes on tap at Henderson House

McMINNVILLE — Henderson House, a 24-hour crisis line service for women and children who may be victims of domestic and sexual abuse, is offering spring training classes beginning March 31. Parenting resource fair slated for March 14 in Newberg

The Chehalem Counseling Center is partnering with Faith in Action to present the Parenting Resource Fair and Workshop, set for March 14 at the Chehalem Armory Center. City Historic Preservation Commission Member openings

The Historic Preservation Commission is looking for citizens and local high school students to apply for open positions. Persons interested in the positions will identify and preserve significant properties in the community.

Stop Smoking classes offered for the month of March

Providence Newberg Medical Center is providing smoking cessation classes. The class offers a systematic approach to quitting smoking through behavior modification techniques, coping skills, social support and weight management. Participants can apply for financial assistance by calling 503-216-5641.

The registration fee for the classes costs $175 for non-Providence Health Plan members. The classes are based on the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking Program.

Old Fashioned Festival Court applications available

The Newberg Old Fashioned Festival is seeking high school juniors and seniors for its 2014 court. Applicants must be in good standing with a minimum 2.0 grade-point average at any Newberg high school. Applications are due by 5 p.m. March 6 at the downtown fire station.

Library board seeking applicants

Two positions are open on the Newberg Public Library board of directors. The positions require that the applicants reside within the city limits. One position is a four-year term from July through June 2018; the other position will complete the term of a previous member from May through June 2015. Kindergarten registration set for Thursday at elementary schools

Kindergarten registration for all Newberg School District elementary schools will be held from 3:30 to 6 p.m. March 6 at each of the district’s six elementary buildings.

Parents must bring their child’s immunization and record of birth (birth certificate/hospital record).

Forms for half-day (free), full-day (tuition based) and the dual language (based at Edwards Elementary) kindergarten programs will be available. Applications for full-day and dual-language kindergarten are due April 4.

Crater hosts Family Math Night

George Fox University will present a Math Night for students in grades 3-5 and their families at 6 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria at Antonia Crater Elementary.

Relay for Life team captains will meet at NHS commons

Relay for Life of Newberg has scheduled a team captain meeting for 7 p.m. March 12 in the commons at Newberg High School. Information about the relay and forming teams will be available.

This year’s relay “Drive Out Cancer” will be held June 21-22 and it’s not too late to form a new team or join an existing team.
