Kindergarten registration set for March 6
Kindergarten registration for the Newberg School District will be held from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday at each of the districts six elementary buildings. Parents will need to bring their childs immunization and record of birth (birth certificate/hospital record). Forms for half-day (free), full-day (tuition based) and the dual language (based at Edwards) kindergarten programs will be available. Applications for full-day and dual-language kindergarten are due April 4.
Newberg FFA members advance to state
Several Newberg FFA members competed Sunday at the Oregon FFA Lower Willamette District Convention, qualifying for the state convention March 21-24 in Bend. The Farm Management team not only took first place, but Newberg team members swept the top seven individual awards. Leading the way was Derrick Harber in first place, followed by Megan Joyce in second, Cayd Erickson in third, John Lombardo in fourth, Gage Hannan in fifth, Madison Plummer in sixth and Karissa Noragon in seventh. Also advancing were: Mackenzie Halleman, for her goat production entrepreneur proficiency project; Katie Noragon, for her small animal production and care entrepreneur proficiency project; and Tia Piscatelli in veterinary science placement proficiency (work experience).
In addition, Margaret Halstead was elected president of the Lower Willamette District.
Mabel Rush Carnival coming March 15
The Mabel Rush Elementary School parent group will host a carnival from 4 to 7 p.m. March 15.
Newberg schools accepting open enrollment transfers
The Newberg School District is accepting open enrollment transfer requests for students in kindergarten through 10th grade through April 1.
Open Enrollment allows students to transfer to another district without obtaining a release from their home district they only have to receive approval from the Newberg School District.
The district is not accepting open enrollment transfer requests at Mabel Rush Elementary, the dual-language program at Edwards Elementary or for the Chehalem Online Learning Alliance (COLA virtual school).
Transfer forms are available at each school or can be downloaded at www.newberg.k12.or.us/district/transfer.
GFU Auxiliary lecture series returns March 14
The George Fox University Auxiliary will host another installment in its lecture series on the history of the university at noon March 14 in the Cap & Gown Room.
Former school president David Le Shana will speak about the presidency between 1969 and 1982. Cost for lunch is $8.50. For reservations, call Sharon Hubbell at 503-537-2314.
