Meet NHS principal candidates Thursday

The Newberg School District will host a parent forum with the three candidates for Newberg High School’s lead principal position from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the west commons at the high school. The three candidates are Yellow School principal Stafford Boyd, Chehalem Valley Middle School principal John Franco and Henley High School principal Mark Risen. The format of the forum will be 30-minute sessions with each candidate, who will make a brief presentation before engaging in an question-and-answer period. Dundee parenting series continues March 4

Dundee Elementary School counselor Kevin Hall will host the third installment of the school’s series of parenting seminars at 6 p.m. March 4 in the library. The seminar will cover the ever-changing topic of kids and technology. For more information, call 503-554-4850.

NHS to participate in blood drive March 4

Newberg High School will hold a blood drive March 4 as part of the American Red Cross’s High School Blood Drive Challenge. The challenge began Jan. 1 and will run through June 13. Participating schools that meet their unit goal and have the highest percentage of blood donation among possible student donors within each division in Oregon and Washington will win the challenge. Winning schools will host a traveling Blood Drive Challenge trophy for a year, receive a pizza party for all students who came to donate blood or volunteered during the competition, and be recognized American on the Red Cross website. Kindergarten registration set for March 6

Kindergarten registration for all Newberg School District elementary schools will be held from 3:30 to 6 p.m. March 6 at each of the district’s six elementary buildings. Parents must bring their child’s immunization and record of birth (birth certificate/hospital record). Forms for half-day (free), full-day (tuition based) and the dual language (based at Edwards Elementary) kindergarten programs will be available. Applications for full-day and dual-language kindergarten are due April 4.

Crater hosts Family Math Night

George Fox University will present a Math Night for students in grades 3-5 and their families at 6 p.m. March 6 in the cafeteria at Antonia Crater Elementary.

Grad Night at Burgerville March 6

The Newberg High School Grad Night committee will host a fundraiser at 5 p.m. March 6 at the Newberg Burgerville store. Dundee coin drive raises over $1,100

Dundee Elementary School’s “Pennies for Patients” fundraiser collected $1,158.65 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The schoolwide goal was to raise $600 and with only a few days remaining, the school’s total sat at $543. Principal Lesley Carsley announced to students that if the goal was met, not only would the winning grade level receive a pizza and ice cream party, but every student would get a “hat day.” Students responded by raising more than 10 times the $60 it needed to meet the goal, collecting $615.09 to more than double the school total. The third grade classrooms raised $261.82 to win the pizza and ice cream party.

Krupicka makes Dean’s List at RIT

Tyler Krupicka of Newberg, a second-year student in the computer engineering program in Rochester Institute of Technology, earned a spot on the school’s dean’s list for the fall 2013 semester.

Hunsinger named to Dean’s List at ASU

Lauren Hunsinger of Newberg received academic honors from the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University by making the university’s dean’s list for the fall 2013 semester.
