St. Paul couple honored as Grower of the Year

Ag business — Dan and JoAnn Keeley receive award during annual Nut Growers Society meeting

A St. Paul couple were named the state’s top nut growers in late January.

At the 99th annual meeting of the Nut Growers Society Jan. 29, Dan and JoAnn Keeley received Grower of the Year accolades.

The Keeleys, owners of Keeley Family Farms in St. Paul, “have not only contributed to the hazelnut industry, they have also spent countless hours serving their community,” according to a press release.

The farm started in 1898, with Dan and JoAnn taking over in 1951. Since then, they’ve expanded from filbert production to now include chestnuts, grass seed, clover and wheat.

“Dan and JoAnn have always been considered ‘cornerstone’ volunteers at every Nut Grower Society function,” the release said. “As for community work, in our small town you can always count on JoAnn to be working as the president of the St. Paul Garden Club, or organizing a parish event, such as a breakfast or BBQ. Dan spends countless hours working with the St. Paul Volunteer Fire Department, American Society of Civil Engineers and the Maplewood Grange.”

At the meeting, the Keeleys were honored for their work, not only in the industry, but in the community as well.

“The Nut Grower’s Society truly appreciates their energy and spirit of volunteerism and is proud to honor them with the 2013 Grower of the Year award,” the release said.
