Howard will run for state house
Government First term Newberg councilor will seek to replace Kim Thatcher after she leaves her House District 25 spot
Newberg City Councilor Ryan Howard joins conservative talk show host Bill Post in the race for Oregon House District 25. The position is currently filled by Kim Thatcher, who recently announced her candidacy for the Senate District 13 position being vacated by Larry George.
Howard announced his candidacy Jan. 7 for the position serving Newberg, Keizer, St. Paul and rural Marion County.
I am running because Im concerned and interested with the work of the Legislature, he said. I have enjoyed my time on the council and will be sad to leave, but Im ready for a role on the state level."
Howard has been a member of the city council since 2011 and is also on the board of the Yamhill County Bar Association. He recently opened a law practice in Newberg with an office on Hancock Street.
Howard said his time on the city council allowed him to observe the Legislature, and while hes seen cooperation on many pressing issues, theres still a lot to do.
I am excited to step into the role of state legislator and I look forward to the opportunity to represent our communities at the state level, he said.
Although Howard said he has platform issues in mind, hes still developing them.
The work ahead it too important to be tied to party lines, he said. At a time when federal bickering has made local leadership more important than ever, we must seek cooperative solutions to state issues.
