Middle school hosting MLK Day event
The third annual Chehalem Valley Community Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 20 in the Newberg High School auditorium. The program will feature singer Kate McLearn, the George Fox University Gospel Choir, Veritas School Concert Choir, and choirs from Mabel Rush and Antonia Crater Elementary Schools. Rotary Peace Scholar Steven Nakana will be the featured speaker. CVMS has partnered with Chehalem Park and Recreation District, the Chehalem Cultural Center, Newberg School District, the Newberg Rotary Clubs and Kiwanis, and the Friendsview Retirement Center to produce the event. This years theme is 50 Years Later The Dream Marches On. The NHS auditorium will be accessible from the north entrance, via Deborah Road. For more information, call CVMS at 503-554-4600.
Locals make Oregon State honor roll
Several area students were named to the Scholastic Honor Roll for the fall term at Oregon State University for posting 3.5 grade-point averages or better. Among the students from Dundee were junior Haley Clark, Dylan Hinson, freshman Matthew Olney and sophomore pre-general engineering major Alvin Yu. Several Newberg students posted straight-A averages, including senior Karla Chavez, sophomore Anthony Farr, junior Andrew Halstead, freshman Alyssa Liljequist, junior Jennifer Meissner and sophomore Tyler Oathes. Among the students from Newberg to post GPAs of 3.5 or higher were junior Lisa Barnard, senior Mega Brower, senior Jordan Danielson, sophomore Paul Duffin, junior Monica Farrar, junior Elise Foster, senior Jacob Kaufman, sophomore Delany Kriz, freshman Madeline Lee, senior Kendahl Mayfield, freshman Catherine Mays, freshman Charles Palmer, post Baccalaureate student Leanne Sherry and senior Brittney Witmer.
