City Club talks preparedness

The Newberg City Club will host a Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross presentation headlined “Together We Prepare” at 11:45 a.m. Jan. 7 at the Villa Academic Center, 501 N. Villa Road.

The presentation will discuss the “disasters that can occur in the local geographic area and the three essentials of being informed, making a plan and building an emergency preparedness kit,” according to a press release.

A buffet lunch is $10 for City Club members, $15 for non-members. Those members not dining pay $2 and it’s $5 for non-members.

DAR hosts program featuring pioneers

The Champoeg Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is inviting the public to its program featuring Lynnette Roberts, a member of the group and also the current treasurer. The topic of her talk is “Early Pioneers to Oregon: The Kanaka People from Hawaii.” It will begin at 11 a.m. Jan. 9.

Third annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration set

From 5 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 20, a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration will occur at the Newberg High School auditorium.

The program will feature singer Kate McLearn, the George Fox University Gospel choir, the Veritas School concert choir and choirs from Mabel Rush and Antonia Crater elementary schools. The speaker is Rotary Peace Scholar Steven Nakana.
