2014 Dogs of Wine Country calendar on sale now

Renewal of the annual favorite after a one year hiatus will benefit Newberg Animal Shelter

Starting in 2007, Newberg Animal Shelter Friends had an idea to start a calendar as a fundraiser to help fund construction of a new shelter. This year, the calendar has returned after a brief hiatus and will feature 12 different wineries and their dogs.

“This year’s calendar is quite different from previous calendars,” a press release said. “Featuring a wonderful collage of photos of each winery’s pet dogs and one cat, the calendar page is dedicated entirely to a snapshot of the lives and personalities of the dogs of each winery.” by: SUBMITTED - Combined effort - Dogs of Wine Country calendars can be purchased at the 12 participating wineries, the Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce, Critter Cabana or through the animal shelter's website at www.newberganimalshelterfriends.org.

The inspiration behind the calendar idea as a fundraiser came from a visit to local wineries.

“When touring through wine country, it was discovered that most wineries have dogs and cats to greet visitors and many of them are adopted from rescue organizations,” board member Janet Floren said in an email.

Combining the artistic talents of the NASF team, a calendar seemed like a doable fundraiser.

“We had volunteers that were experts in photography and volunteers in graphic art services,” Floren said. “Because other animal rescue groups had calendars as fundraisers we hoped that a wine country calendar featuring their dogs and cats would be a profitable fundraiser for the shelter.”

Floren also pointed out that creating a calendar is a lot of work, and time consuming. The same volunteers worked on each year’s calendar until 2012, when the team decided it needed a break.

“A new team was formed in 2012 to produce the 2014 calendar,” Floren said. “This gave them plenty of time and with a new graphics artist and new editing team, a new design was evolved. The new calendar is entertaining and fun to read and has inspirational and educational features.”

The team is hopeful that the calendar is a success and that the project can continue for years to come.

“It’s not just a calendar or appointment maker, it’s a glimpse into the lives and personalities of our local wineries and their beloved pets,” Floren said.

Calendars can be purchased at the 12 participating wineries, Critter Cabana and the Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce. Orders can also be placed online or using a mail-in form on the animal shelter’s website, www.newberganimal shelterfriends.org.
