From chemistry to dentistry
New business New dentist hopes to be a part of the community, create outreach for children and seniors who lack dental hygiene
Angela Toy said she loved working in biomedical chemical products research, but there wasnt enough interaction with people for her.
I really liked the sciences and research aspect, but I needed more people interaction, Toy said.
So, in September she opened a dental practice, one she took over from Newberg dentist Stephen Gilroy.
Toy said shes been looking for a place to open for the past several years, which includes her move west from Minnesota to Salem 18 months ago.
Ive been looking for the right fit and size of the community and proximity to the city, she said. I wouldnt say Im a country girl, but Im not a city girl either.
After meeting Gilroy and talking with him, she said things started happening from there and she found herself in Newberg.
I think its going well, she said. Im excited to become a part of the community.
Toy said she had a background in dentistry so she only had a little bit of coursework to do before she could start practicing, and now she wants to start outreach programs within the community.
I didnt want to be the anonymous practice in the big city, she said. I think Id really like to reach out to the senior center and schools to practice dental hygiene for young kids and seniors. They are typically really lacking. Im hoping to contact maybe the pediatric medical offices in Newberg, maybe the elementary schools and getting involved that way.
