As OHSET events get going this season, Molalla's team is looking strong after their first event.
First year coach Tiffany LaPlante is a 2006 MHS grad who also competed in OHSET during her time in school. Her niece is a sophomore this season, and she said she was asked to apply for the position of head coach.
"I was very impressed with how we did at this first meet," LaPlante said. "They really came together and were there for each other."
Molalla placed fourth overall and first among medium-sized teams.
This year, Colton High School only had one OHSET member in senior Bailey Naylor, so she practices and travels to events with the Molalla team, but is still considered as the Colton team.
Molalla took home four first place finishes at the first Tri-River Valley meet on Feb. 16-19 in McMinnville.
First up are Naylor and Molalla senior Shawnee Gibbons, who took home first place in Working Pairs; Molalla senior Codi Mae Edwards grabbed first in the Individual Flags with a time of 9.327; Gibbons and Edwards took first in the Team Birangle with a time of 25.748, and the Molalla Canadian Flag Race Team took first with a time of 39.61 – the team is made up of Gibbons, Edwards, and Molalla seniors Garrett Veltman and Shelby Defabio.
"Our team events were amazing," LaPLante said. "We had a lot of top-ten placings, and i was impressed. I couldn't have asked for a better first meet."
Also among the top finishers include Gibbons in second in the Barrels with a time of 15.251 and second in driving while Naylor finished second in Trail Equitation.
Veltman finished third in the Individual Flags with a time of 11.008 and fifth in Keyhole with a time of 8.189.
Edwards grabbed third in the Figure 8 with a finishing time of 11.337 while Gibbons followed right behind her in fourth with a time of 11.386.
Gibbons also grabbed fifth in Reining; Veltman, Naylor, and Defabio took fourth in Team Penning; and Molalla's B team grabbed fourth in the Team Canadian Flag Race, made up of Naylor, Molalla senior Regan Johnson, and Molalla sophomores Shelby Nunn and Hunter Kluver.
Molalla's next meet is this Thursday, March 16 through Sunday, March 19 at the Yamhill County Fairgrounds in McMinnville. The Indians' meet after that is April 13-16 also in McMinnville.
