On Friday, the girls got a decisive win over Elgin/Imbler in chilly conditions. “The game began at 11 a.m. with a game-time temperature of 32 degrees and a wind chill that brought the temperature down to 25 degrees,” Coach Jim Brochis said. “[The Vikings] stayed focused and played an error-free game and won 11-1 in five innings. Becky Patterson pitched a great game and ended up with four strikeouts, no walks and gave up only one hit. Mikaela Shelton, Becky Patterson, Cassondra Neff and Joslyn Stanfield each had two hits.”

Shortly after their win over Elgin/Imbler, the Vikings lost 16-4 to Union/Cove. “In addition to the chilly temperatures, rain began to fall,” Brochis said. “[The girls] jumped to a two-run lead, with an opportunity to blow the game open, but failed with multiple runners left on base. The third inning was riddled with errors and the Lady Vikings ended up losing 4-16; but I must add that [they] fought to the very end.”

The following day, the Vikings put a shellacking on Burns. “The temperature was a balmy 45 degrees with no wind,” Brochis said. “The Lady Vikings recouped and came back strong, beating Burns 11-1 with another error-free game. Ace pitcher Becky Patterson struck out 11, walked none and gave up only two hits. Cassondra Neff had multiple hits.”

Brochis was happy with the way the girls played in Union. “This tournament was a great learning experience for all the players who were able to participate during their spring break,” he said. “Even without all the members of the team present, the Colton Lady Vikings played excellent softball for 14 out of 17 innings.”

Next up, the Vikings play Willamina at home on Tuesday, April 1, at 5 p.m., and then go on the road to Gervais on Friday, April 4.
