1A boys basketball: Cougars unbeaten in league play, look toward districts

by: CORY MIMMS - Avery Nofziger shoots for three. It was a big week on the court for Country Christian’s boys basketball. The Cougars first beat the Falls City Mountaineers 81-23 on Tuesday, Feb. 11. Avery Nofziger and Luke Carter both took double-doubles against the Mountaineers.

The Cougars followed up Tuesday’s win with a 60-32 win over the Perrydale Pirates on Thursday, Feb. 13. Carter picked up another double-double against the Pirates, and it was also Country Christian’s Homecoming night.

At half time, Cooper Nofziger and Stephanie Christensen were crowned king and queen. Nofziger is playing his final season for the Cougars, as he’ll graduate this year.

Watching Nofziger crowned, Ben Grandle said, “It’ll be weird playing without Cooper next year. Some of the other guys will have to step up.”

But the team isn’t focusing on next year just yet, Grandle said. “[We’re] just trying to solely focus on districts … The whole team is excited for districts. Everyone has been putting in time in practice,” he said.

The team needs to stay sharp in the gap between league ending and districts beginning, Grandle said.

Looking at the crowd gathered in the gym, a crowd that had just roared for the girls basketball team as they secured the Casco League title by beating the Pirates, Grandle said it’s fun playing in front of a big crowd.

“Districts always have big crowds,” he said, adding that he always gets a little nervous before games, but he likes playing for a big audience.

It’s been an amazing season for the Cougars, particularly in league play, which they ended Friday, Feb. 14, with a 65-30 win over Willamette Valley. Grandle and Jordan Syphard each took 16 points against the Warriors that night.

“We started off with a tough schedule, picked up a couple losses but learned from them,” Grandle said. “We know what we have to do [in districts].”

It definitely shows. The Cougars went 14-0 in league and 19-5 overall.
