Coltons JV girls team beat the Gervais Cougars 35-27 on Tuesday, Jan. 28. The game came down to the fourth quarter, which opened with the Vikings up 25-24.
The Vikings and the Lady Cats went head to head in the opening minutes, with sophomore Courtney Cox led Colton on the court.
Midway through the first quarter, Kyndra Ham landed a two-point basket that put the Vikings up 8-5. Colton maintained the three-point lead into the second quarter.
The Vikings got up to a 15-9 lead in the first minutes of the second quarter, thanks in part to a two-point bucket from Megan Imdieke and a free-throw shot landed by Haley McCoy. But Gervais slugged back before the half, which closed with the Lady Cats leading 18-15.
The Vikings came out aggressive in the third quarter though, putting eight points on the board before the Lady Cats knew what hit them. Gervais regrouped and secured six points before the quarter closed.
The Vikings stood on a one-point lead opening the final quarter. Caitlyn Wienberger, who swung from varsity to JV (before an injury later in the varsity game sent her off the court for the remainder of the season), nabbed a two-point basket and a point at the foul line early in the fourth quarter.
Tia Wheeler added a two pointer of her own to the board, and the Vikings were then sitting on a five-point lead.
As the game neared its close, the Lady Cats struggled to overcome the Vikings defense. Gervais nabbed three points, while Colton took another five.
