Coach Phil Wiesner talks Molalla's win over Taft
Molallas girls basketball team beat Taft 43-32 in their final game of 2013, on Dec. 30.
Coach Phil Wiesner said they played better than the score indicates though. We forced a lot of turnovers in the first quarter and got out to a great start, he said.
Molalla came out and took an early 12-2 lead, however, they began to lose that lead in the fourth.
We put them at the line too many times in the fourth when we had a substantial lead, Wiesner said. We closed out the game well in the last three minutes, taking a six point lead to the final margin in that time.
Rylee Elliott came off the bench and was respectable at the line for us, going 8/12, hitting some big ones in the fourth quarter when we let Taft think they might have a chance, Wiesner said. Amanda Rieskamp had a nice night on the boards for us collecting eight and providing great leadership as usual.
They werent the only two Indians that helped secure the win though.
Isabella Petitta struggled with her shot but did a good job of making up for it with other aspects of her game, having three assists from a wing position for us and playing solid defense, Wiesner said. Josie Childs continues to grow as a guard for us with her composure and court leadership. Katelyn Satyna is our rock, always being solid on the court both offensively and defensively leading by example.
Hailey Satyna is our miss mayhem to opponents, Wiesner said. She must seem like she is everywhere. She's very quick and disrupts the other team with her defense and is difficult to defend when she is on offense. A sophomore with a bright future.
The other players on the team are also getting floor time.
During December we've been playing deep into our bench in all our games, letting individuals find their niche where they can contribute for our team, Wiesner said. Hopefully this will pay dividends for us later when we need help from our bench in an important moment. The girls are displaying great team unity and continue [to] fine tune their game both individually and together.
