Indians end on high note

by: CORY MIMMS - The seniors on Molalla's football team were honored during halftime on Friday night. The Indians finished their season with a big 39-19 win over the La Salle Falcons on Friday. Molalla finished fourth in the Tri-Valley League, 2-3 in league play and 4-5 overall. This marks an improvement over last season, when the Indians only nabbed one win in the league and finished with a 2-8 record.

The season was up and down, a rollercoaster of wins and losses, which is tough for athletes to deal with. They opened league play at home against Estacada with a narrow 27-24 loss. That game proved to be the closest Molalla would play all season. They traveled to Madras after that, where they won 49-0. Then they took a 42-7 loss against Gladstone.

Dealing with those highs and lows is just as difficult as coping with multiple defeats, Coach Kaleb Mitchell said. “It ends up repetitious.”

This season he focused on “teaching the kids how to win again.”

Friday’s game was a good way for the seniors to end their final season, Mitchell said. “Our offense did well, our quarterback (Austin Alexander) did really well, and the defense did really well.”

Though they’ll graduate 15 seniors this year, they’ve built a solid foundation of returning juniors, and all signs are pointing to continued improvement through their player development.
