Football: Indians win 32-27


by: CORY MIMMS - Quarterback Austin Alexander runs through Pirates' defense.The Indians won their last non-league game of the season on Friday, Sept. 20. They beat Phoenix in a close 32-27 bout.

Molalla kicked first, and Phoenix took it at the 16 yard line. The Pirates' first push failed, but they went on to score twice in the first quarter. Leading 14-0 going into the second quarter, the Pirates seemed to have taken the game early, but the Indians came back.

Off a clean pass from quarterback Austin Alexander, Payton Dobbs got Molalla’s first touchdown. The Indians failed to get the point after, leaving the score 14-6.

Molalla shut down the Pirates near the end zone and took the score to 14-12, once again failing to get the point after.

After the half, Phoenix scored first, gaining a nine-point lead, 21-12. The Indians failed to gain any points in the third, but they came out in the fourth with a new attitude. They put 20 points on the scoreboard and only allowed the Pirates six, closing the game 32-27.

Alexander passed 191 yards, with a 32 percent completion rate. Isaiah Bilbrey rushed 24 times for 117 yards, and took one touchdown. Dobbs lead the Indians in scoring with three touchdowns, one off an 85-yard pass from Alexander. Leading Molalla’s defense was Conner Green, with six tackles.

The Indians close non-league play 2-2. Their homecoming game against Estacada on Friday, Sept. 27, is their first league game.
