Soccer: Boys open league play with a 1-0 win
Fortino Medina scored the first league goal of the season late in the first half on Thursday, leading the Indians to a 1-0 win against the Gladstone Gladiators. Medina nabbed the goal off a header.
Molalla had several key players. Goalkeeper Emanuel Aquino started the first half and grabbed saves that kept Gladstones offense frustrated.
Away from the goal, it was a high contact game. In the first ten minutes, Gladstones Brandon Beckwith pushed Eric Dickson, resulting in a turnover.
In the 22nd minute, Luis Rojas made a hard play for possession and fell, but the ball remained in play. Jesse Stutzman took it into Gladiator territory and got Molallas first chance for a goal. Gladstones goalkeeper was on point though.
Both the Indians and Gladstone played good defensively, though they had different strategies. Gladstone played shallow in the field, with their defensive players staying closer to their goal than the Indians defense. The Indians played with more freedom, which resulted in them pushing into Gladstone territory more often than Gladstone pushed into Indian territory.
The Indians play next in La Salle, on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
