Life lessons through football

Former UO players coach youth from around Oregon

by: CORY MIMMS - Young athletes gather around Seahawks cornerback Walter Thurmond, during a youth football camp on Saturday, July 20, in Molalla, Ore.
Sixty-four kids ran some plays with Walter Thurmond, Seahawks cornerback, on Saturday, July 20, at Heckard Field.

The Oregon Football Association (OFA) put on the day camp in conjunction with Molalla Youth Football. Three former University of Oregon players—Brent Haberly, Ryan Depalo, and Garren Strong—were also there to coach the kids.

The aspiring athletes were between third and eighth grade and were from around Oregon. This is the second year the OFA has come to Molalla. Last year the attendance was a bit higher at 84. Though less kids came out this year, the goal remained the same.

“We use football as our vehicle to mentor the kids, to teach life lessons,” said Depalo, OFA president.
