Oregon Pacific Railroad is working to pave over crossing as a courtesy to Union Pacific Railroad

Drivers that frequent Vick Road in Molalla will soon have a much smoother ride as the unused train crossing will be paved over in the next few weeks.

Oregon Pacific Railroad , which operated in the Molalla area until 1996, laid down gravel along the crossing on Thursday, Sept. 14, and will soon finish paving the section once the rain has settled the gravel into place, according to an email from OPR general manager Richard Samuels.

Samuels said they also have plans for work along South Oak Grove Road about one mile west of Highway 213 between South Liberal Way and South Macksburg Road, and they are going to aim to coincide that with the paving on Vick Road, likely in a few weeks. "We are waiting for the rain to settle the gravel, plus we need to do some work at Oak Grove road," Samuels said. "Once we are ready to do both projects, we will set up the paving contractor."

Samuels said OPR is doing the work as a courtesy to Union Pacific Railroad , which owns the land. The Oregon Department of Transportation has jurisdiction over rail crossings between and two feet outside the rails, and beyond those boundaries, Clackamas County takes over. An OPR employee that was working on laying the gravel on Sept. 14 said Clackamas County had made the decision to have the former railroad crossing paved over.

The crossing, which lies about a quarter of a mile west of the intersection of Molalla Avenue, isn't a friendly one to drivers as Vick Road is a 55 MPH zone, but the tracks required drivers to slow down significantly in order to avoid possible damage to vehicles due to the uneven surface.
