Jim Wimsatt has lived in the Molalla area for more than 50 years, and now he's got his own piece of the town he grew up in as his gun and ammo shop, Stampede Armory, is up and running.
"We're a family-run business and we take care of our customers," Wimsatt said. "We try to help people get their questions answered and we're very community-oriented."
Wimsatt, who lives in Mulino, graduated from Molalla High School in 1984 and has been a big part of the community he holds dear. He was a co-owner of Wild Bill's gun shop when it was open in town, and now he hopes to continue that line of business after learning a thing or two from the first go-around.
"It's one of those things where it's kind of my own take on looking more at what the community asks for and learning from our mistakes in that aspect," he said.
Wimsatt said he hopes to be more specialized with his business's offerings and to be able to coexist with others in town rather than compete from the same business.
"You've got to try not to grow too much or try to carry some things that Bi-Mart might," he said. "We're trying to be a little more specialized, and our goal is to not carry stuff that Bi-Mart does, so we want to coexist instead of trying to compete with each other."
Stampede Armory, located at 105 South Molalla Avenue, will also offer concealed carry permit classes and look to forge other opportunities to ensure people are knowledgeable and safe when purchasing and handling firearms.
Wimsatt said the shop has a website that he hopes to see go live soon. Check back at stampedearmory.com and visit them on Facebook .
The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. They will be holding a grand opening on Sept. 9 during regular business hours.
