MPD - Two happy kids who had been riding in a car with their dad show off the $100 Secret Santa bill this Molalla Police officer had just given them after pulling over the car. The Secret Santa funds are donated by Molalla citizens who want to share some Christmas Joy with fellow Molallans.Everyone at the Molalla Police Department is sharing the Christmas spirit with people in the community again this year by handing out Secret Santa gifts.

Chief Rod Lucich and Secret Santa officers are pulling over cars at random on Molalla streets to present gifts in the form of $100 bills to the lucky driver.

“We are just excited – we get so much joy out of doing this,” said MPD Support Services Supervisor Ronda Stone. “We just want to make people have a good Christmas. That’s the sole reason we do it – and it makes the people who read about this happy too.”

CONNER WILLIAMS - Chief Rod Lucich pulled over a car Wednesday afternoon driven by a young man home from college for the holidays. He is all smiles when he pulls the $100 bill out of the Secret Santa envelope.Chief Lucich said the Secret Santa gifts are made possible, 100 percent, by donations.

“The Secret Santa program was brought to us last year by a local business that wanted to do something nice for the community and wanted to bring law enforcement and the community together in a positive way,” Lucich said. CONNER WILLIAMS - The look of astonishment on this luck driver's face tells it all."Because of the positive reaction to this last year, others came forward and wanted to do more of it this year. So the Molalla Police Department is just a vessel for carrying out this good will from our wonderful citizens and business people in our community, and we are honored and privileged to have the opportunity to do it.”

So last year’s 10 Secret Santa gifts will nearly quadruple this year.

CONNER WILLIAMS - A young woman holds out her hand to thank the chief after recieiving a Secret Santa $100 bill from him Wednesday.“In a surprise twist, we are doing more Secret Santa missions today,” Stone said Wednesday morning. “We have received $3,900 in donations, so that is 39 Secret Santa gifts we can give out. Last year, we had the first donation from a local business, and this year we also received donations from that business, plus another business in town, and a private citizen.”

Molalla Police have been making videos of the presentations. One video shows an officer presenting a $100 bill to a driver he’d just pulled over, and she jumps out of the car and gives him a hug.

This afternoon (Wednesday) Pioneer reporter Conner Williams is riding along with the chief to catch more Secret Santa surprises on video. Watch for that video later today.
