More than 400 riders of all ages were expected to participate in Sunday's leisurely ride, which started at the Molalla Buckeroo Assocation's rodeo grounds and meandered through the town's scenic countryside, past the Coleman Ranch and through Feyrer Park before returning to the rodeo grounds.

"This is a town coming togehter," Kim Krupicka of Molalla said. "This is how we start the Fourth. This is the fun part. It's the beginning of a big week for the town. And we get to see a lot of beautiful country."

Conditions were ideal as the first group of riders started out at 9:30 a.m. under overcast skies, temperatures in the low 60s and no threat of rain. The ride was expected to take about two to three hours.

"It's so free," said Silverton's Patty Zirbell, who was riding alongside Shauna Garza of Molalla. "It's amazing to have everybody together and have a herd of horses ... it feels free."

This week's festivities kick into high gear beginning Wednesday with the Kiddies Parade at 6 p.m., and the opening performance of the 91st Molalla Buckeroo PRCA Rodeo at 8 p.m.
