Molalla’s Freedom 5K was voted the best race in Oregon during July by Race Oregon readers.

“This award is a big honor for Molalla,” race organizer Jon Knapp said. “On the same day in our state there is a race with close to 3,000 people and another race with a 40 year history, not to mention all the other races in July in Oregon. So for us to have the title being voted the best race in Oregon in July by the readers of Run Oregon is a huge deal. This award isn't just for the Freedom 5K, it is for our town, as that is what makes the race special: It is the crowds that cheer on the runners, the giant street parade, the Buckeroo who gives us free tickets for our runners/walkers, the over 50 race volunteers from Foothills, the police who clear the streets, our sponsors who support us financially; it all adds up to one amazing unique event, and it is cool to see the running community in Oregon taking notice.”

The Freedom 5K had a 73% increase in registration this year, up to 390 runners from 225. And at 56, the volunteer staff more than doubled as well. Sponsoship increased from nine to 15.

“We will seek to capitalize on this recognition heading into 2014, and anticipate it helping us attract more participants and more sponsors,” Knapp said. “Our race still has a lot of growth potential, and we are thankful to our amazing town for making this event so great!”
