Want better health? Follow Delores Heard

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Delores Heard line dances her way to better health.

Delores Heard is a nonstop person. After the death of her husband 20 years ago, she took over managing the West Linn condominiums where she lives and has invested lots of time and nonstop energy in making them the nicest in the neighborhood.

She went on a nonstop Weight Watchers diet and lost 35 pounds and started line dancing at the Oregon City Pioneer Community Center twice a week.

Then she accidentally met longtime West Linn Adult Community Center member Rita Perry, who told Delores about the Wednesday line dancing class at the center, taught by Carol Harn. Delores signed up and now dances almost nonstop three days a week.

Here’s what Heard says about line dancing: “It’s changed my life! I’m 82 years old, and I can keep up with all these younger women who have become my good friends now. And I’m off all the medications I used to take.”

And the only relative in her family who lived beyond 82 was a square dancing uncle who made it to 95. The dancing just keeps you alive.

In addition, Heard said, “Line dancing forces your brain to communicate with your feet. It’s great for balance because you spend so much time on one foot or another.”

When she isn’t line dancing, Heard knits for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, works on jigsaw puzzles, plans her 65th high school reunion and deals with condominium maintenance issues. She’s just nonstop.

If you’d like to try line dancing on Wednesdays at 1 p.m., you can sign up at the front desk. The cost is $5 per class, not much when you consider the benefits. Just ask Delores Heard.

The West Linn Adult Community Center is at 1180 Rosemont Road. Call 503-557-4704 for specific times and possible fees. Also, all lunches listed below are subject to change, but only for the better.
