Oregon wines usher out old, welcome new year

Kramer sparkling wines are cause for celebration any time of year

by: REVIEW PHOTO: BARB RANDALL - Kramer Vineyards has released Celebrate Rose of Carmine, the newest of its Celebrate sparkling wines. It is the only sparkling wine produced from the carmine grape in the world, according to winemaker Kim Kramer. Sample it at Kramers tasting room in Carlton.

How will you welcome the New Year? Whether you celebrate in a quiet or rambunctious fashion, there is no better way to mark the end or beginning of a year than with a toast with Oregon fine wines. I can offer a couple of suggestions of what to serve.

Kim Kramer, the winemaker at Kramer Vineyards, held a virtual tasting last week of two limited production sparkling wines, the 2011 Brut and the Celebrate Rose of Carmine. Both were exceptional in my opinion.

The brut is produced entirely from fruit grown on the Kramer vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. The blend for this vintage is 50 percent pinot noir and 50 percent chardonnay. The second wine, Celebrate Rose, is the only sparkling wine produced from the carmine grape anywhere in the world, according to Kim. The carmine grape is a cross of cabernet sauvignon, carignane and merlot.

“After making a direct press rose for several vintages, we were inspired to sparkle this wine in 2012 for our tasting room,” Kim said. “We were so pleased with the result, we made it one of our first club selections when our sparkling club was launched several weeks ago.”

I loved the color and flavor. Frankly, what’s not to like about bubbly?

To sample these wines and others, visit the new Kramer tasting room located at 258 Kutch St. in Carlton. It is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays to Mondays. Learn more online at kramervineyards.com.

Our friends at Archery Summit Winery invite us book a tour and tasting through Tuesday and receive 15 percent off on wine purchases. This is a great opportunity to stock the cellar and provide visiting family and friends with a fun outing.

Archery Summit offers pinot noirs, roses and pinot gris. Visit archerysummit.com to learn about their wines and schedule a tour. Tours cost $40 per person and are scheduled daily at 10:30 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Reservations are required; call Karina at 503-864-4300 to schedule.

If your resolution is to learn more about Oregon wines in 2014, Kramer Vineyards and Archery Summit can get you off on the right track.

Whether you choose to learn more about wines in 2014, or you take on a more traditional resolution — such as learning to cook, ceasing smoking, losing weight, getting in shape or saving money — recognize that consistent behavior will win the race. Ask yourself what it will take to achieve your goal and then break the process down into small steps. And cut yourself a little slack. You can’t expect perfection overnight; do something every day that brings you closer to your goal, and before you know it, you will have succeeded.

Some folks will be focusing on eating more healthfully in the New Year. To get you started, I’ve shared a recipe for Fruit and Oat Muesli, a great way to start the day.

Bon Appétit! Eat something wonderful!

1 1/2 cups grated peeled red-skinned apples (about 2 medium)
