Lakers come up just short in OIBA title game

Lake Oswego advances to the championship but falls to Sherwood

Lake Oswego's summer OIBA team came up just one win short of taking home the championship this year, falling to an upstart Sherwood team 5-4 in the title game. The Lakers, after winning their division, stormed through the playoffs and knocked off the Bowmen 3-2 the previous day.

However, Sherwood battled back to reach the title game and then rallied to knock off the Lakers. Sherwood showed that it is more than ready to handle its new digs in the Three Rivers League next year. In what was already considered to be arguably the deepest league in the state, the Bowmen knocked off new league rivals Lakeridge, West Linn and Lake Oswego en route to the title.

The Lakers, playing with confidence having already knocked off the Bowmen, jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage, getting RBIs from Max Anderson and Will Burton.

Sherwood would tie the game in the third inning and then take the lead in the fifth. A passed ball gave the Bowmen the lead and then a two-out, two-run single put Sherwood up 5-2.

Lake Oswego rallied to get back in the game in the bottom of the sixth. Once again it was Anderson who sparked the offense, leading off the inning with a double. Oscar Stout then singled and Mitch Verburg followed with a two-run double to pull his team within a run.

Lake Oswego still trailed by just one run heading into the bottom of the seventh and had an opportunity to finish off the rally.

Matt Voelzke led off with a single but Sherwood played solid defense to end the threat.

Lake Oswego still has plenty to be optimistic about following its summer campaign. After a strong spring where the team tied for another Three Rivers League title, a large portion of that team graduated, including virtually its entire pitching staff.

However, the Lakers proved that, with the players they have coming back, they could still be one of the most competitive teams once again in the Metro area.
