Pacer boys, Laker girls take third at state tennis tourney

by: VERN UYETAKE - Lake Oswego's Morgan Reno and her partner Bridget Myers reached the quarterfinals of last week's state tennis tournament.The Lakeridge boys and Lake Oswego girls each capped their very strong respective seasons by each taking third at the state tennis tournament last week.

All of Lakeridge's singles players and its top doubles team won at least one match to help accumulate points for the Pacers.

In singles, Simone Homedes and Emmett Moore each won their opening matches in straight sets before moving on to face ranked opponents.

Homedes gave the No. 6 seed in his bracket a challenge, falling 6-2, 7-6.

District champion Matt Stephens advanced to the quarterfinals, getting a first-round bye and then topping his first opponent 6-3, 6-3 before falling to the No. 3 seed.

In doubles, Lakeridge's team of Bruno Homedes and Russell Risenhoover also had a first-round bye and had an easy time in their first match, winning 6-4, 6-1. Then, against a strong No. 2 seed from Sunset, the Pacer duo took them to a tiebreaker in the first set but lost the match 7-6, 6-2.

For the Lake Oswego girls, Katie Day dropped a difficult opening round match but then rolled in the consolation bracket.

She won her first two matches 8-0 to advance to the consolation finals and won that match 7-6, 6-2.

In doubles, two Lake Oswego pairings made the semifinals. The No. 6 seed of Libby Dozois and Claire Murphy had an early bye and then won 6-2, 6-1 before falling to the top seed and eventual state champions.

Bridget Myers and Morgan Reno rolled with straight sets victories 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2 before dropping to the No. 2 seed in the bracket.

Lake Oswego's Caroline Dorman and Elle Meyer entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed but received a brutal draw. After an opening round bye, the duo went up against an unseeded team from Lincoln that would roll all the way to the finals and finishing as the state runners up.

Lakeridge's qualifying doubles team of Yumi Ito and Anna Seydel also won a match 6-4, 6-4 before falling to the No. 5 seed.
