LO falls to Canby in extras, remains in first

The Lakers cap a sweep with OC before dropping just their second game in the TRL

Despite dropping a tough 2-1 decision to Canby in its series opener with the Cougars, Lake Oswego still held on to first place in the Three Rivers League Monday thanks to West Linn's victory over Clackamas.

Lake Oswego wrapped up a sweep of Oregon City last week, winning Friday's finale 14-1.

Travis Sanders got the start and threw a complete game two-hitter with four strikeouts.

Lake Oswego got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Tyler Coleman and Kenny Oyama each walked to open the inning, followed by a bunt from Joey Martin to load the bases.

The Lakers then scored on a double-play ball and an error to go up 2-0.

Lake Oswego blew the game open in the next inning with four runs. Sanders and Coleman each had RBI singles, followed by a two-run single from Max Anderson.

The Lakers would post a seven-spot in the bottom of the fifth as virtually the entire roster got in on the action.

Eight straight batters reached on the rally which was highlighted by a two-run double from Austin Prentice as the Lakers blew the contest open further.

Monday, Lake Oswego spoiled a gem by Jordan Horak, losing in extra innings to a Canby team that has plagued the Lakers over the years.

Horak threw nine innings and gave up just two hits but, an unearned run in the 11th frame was enough for the Cougars to pick up the win.

Lake Oswego scored its lone run in the bottom of the second. Coleman singled to start the frame and moved to second on a ground out by Oyama. He would later score after Mitch Verburg reached on an error.

Canby tied the game in the fourth inning and had runners on second and third with only one out but Horak got out of the game without any further damage.

He wouldn't give up a hit in the next five innings.

However, Lake Oswego struggled on offense as well. Sanders was thrown out at the plate in the bottom of the sixth on a fielder's choice and Verburg nearly scored in the bottom of the 10th, but Harrison Reece was called out on a very close play after a ground ball to second base.

Canby loaded the bases in the top of the 11th and, with two outs, a passed ball scored what would be the winning run.

Horak led off the bottom of the inning by drawing a walk and advanced to third after stealing second base with one out.

However, he was thrown out at home for the second out and the Lakers were saddled with just their second league loss of the season.

Lake Oswego wraps up its series with Canby this week and faces West Linn starting next Monday.
