Lakers sweep series from Pacers

Lake Oswego then moves into second place after dropping opener to Cavs

by: MATTHEW SHERMAN - Lake Oswego's Harrison Reece slides into second base just ahead of a throw in the Lakers' victory over Lakeridge Friday. Reece also pitched a shutout for the Lakers in last Wednesay's game. The Lake Oswego baseball team capped a sweep of Lakeridge last week before suffering its first league loss of the season Monday 10-0 against a powerhouse Clackamas squad.

On Wednesday, April 16, the Lakers rode the arm of Harrison Reece, who tossed a complete game shutout against Lakeridge.

Reece walked three batters and scattered three hits while striking out five in a strong performance, not allowing an extra base hit on the evening.

Lake Oswego got on the board in the top of the third inning. After Max Anderson and Mitch Verburg reach base with singles, Jordan Horak belted a two-out home run to quickly make it 3-0.

Reece wouldn't need much help on the mound but Kenny Oyama added an RBI single in the top of the fifth and the Lakers would blow the game open in the sixth.

Verburg would hit a sacrifice fly and Reece would help his own cause with an RBI single to plate Gus Tolleson.

Travis Sanders then had an RBI single to cap the scoring.

On Friday, Lake Oswego took the lead early when some Pacer miscues spotted the Lakers six runs in the bottom of the first and Lake Oswego held on for an 11-6 win.

After Reece led off with a single and Horak reached on a walk, an error on a bunt by Sanders scored the first run.

Tyler Coleman and Oyama followed with singles and Joey Martin reached on a two-base error that scored a pair of runs.

Suddenly it was 5-0 without an out being recorded. But the Pacers got out of the inning with only one more run plated on an RBI groundout and Jacob Tipton kept Lake Oswego off the board until the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the fifth, Lakeridge made its move. Austin Ruffner led off with a double and Graham Leib reached on an error. Jack Daraee then knocked a two-run double and Dutton Elske followed with a double of his own to make it 6-3 with no outs in the inning.

After a sacrifice bunt, Bo McClintock hit a sacrifice fly as Lakeridge cut into the deficit further.

Lake Oswego would mount a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning, getting an RBI single from Will Burton.

Then, in the top of the sixth, Lakeridge got the run back. Michael Kuhn led off with a double and later scored on a two-out single by Daraee to make it 7-5.

However, Lake Oswego put things out of reach with four runs in the bottom of the frame.

Coleman and Oyama each had RBI doubles in the inning as Lake Oswego pulled away.

The Lakers then mustered just five hits and had four errors in their opener against the Cavaliers, dropping to 3-1 in league.

Lakeridge is still searching for its first league win as its opener with Canby was rained out Monday.
