Pacer girls swim past Sunset

Lakeridge tops the Apollos who took second in state last winter

The Lakeridge swim teams battled Metro power Sunset before the Christmas Break whose girls and boys teams both figure to challenge for the state title this season.

The Pacer girls knocked off the Apollos in a very exciting meet 89-82, bolstering what were already very high expectations for the season.

Lakeridge picked up victories in all but two events. In the 200 medley relay, Lakeridge's team of Rowan Hauber, Sonya Ahmadyar, Brenda Cha and Keaton Blovad cruised to a six-second victory, getting the meet started on a positive note.

Blovad was then quickly back in the pool for the 200 freestyle, cracking the two-minute barrier in 1:58.47 and winning the event by eight seconds.

Sunset's superior depth couldn't match up with the Pacers' top-end swimmers in the competition. Cha tallied her first individual win of the meet in the 200 individual medley, winning in a time of 2:09.69 and Hauber followed with an impressive victory in the 50 freestyle in 25.35 seconds.

Cha doubled up her victories with a dominating performance in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.93 followed by Blovad's second individual victory, this time in the 100 freestyle in 54.68 seconds.

Sunset then won both the 500 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay before the Pacers rallied.

Hauber scored a win in the backstroke, touching the wall in 1:01.29 in what was one of the better races of the competition.

Ahmadyar would then score her first win of the meet after taking second in the 500. She captured the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.96.

Lakeridge would cap what was already an impressive showing with a dominating performance in the 400 freestyle relay, led by swims form Hauber, Cha, Ahmadyar and Blovad. The team's time of 3:42.22 seconds was more than seven seconds faster than Sunset's top team.

In the boys meet, the Apollos were too much to handle, racking up 120 points but the Pacers put up some impressive times.

Liam O'Shea had another strong meet, taking third in the 200 freestyle and then winning the 500 freestyle in a terrific 4:30.11.

Alex Schaffer and CJ Hansen would take third and fourth in the backstroke and Lakeridge would end the night on a strong note.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Schaffer, O'Shea, Max Swaim and Sam Swaim would rack up a win in 3:36.01.
