Laker OIBA team heads into playoffs

An injury-plagued summer has often left Lake Oswego shorthanded

It's been somewhat of a trying summer for the Lake Oswego baseball team but one that could ultimately pay dividends next spring.

After a fantastic OIBA season last year, the Lakers have been plagued by injuries and haven't seen the type of results they are accustomed to.

Lake Oswego has still posted a winning record this summer but the program's standards have always been lofty.

“The older kids in the program aren't used to losing. We only lost four games all last summer. There's just been a rash of injuries, probably the worst we've seen since I've been here. It's been draining at times,” coach Jake Anders said.

Lake Oswego has struggled with consistency and has rarely played at full strength all summer.

“The development has been a little slower than usual. There's been about 10 times this summer where we've given up a big inning because of our mistakes. We definitely have a lot of work to do,” Anders said.

But Anders knows that the additional playing time that his younger players are receiving should help as the Lakers look to fill some key holes next year.

“Realistically, we should be fine. We have all of our pitching coming back, our entire outfield and some middle infielders,” Anders said.

Lake Oswego has seen some strong pitching performances this summer. Jordan Horak has continued to be strong on the mound and Harrison Reece has been a bright spot after missing a portion of the spring.

“He's been doing it all on his own for us sometimes,” Anders said.

Lake Oswego will open up the OIBA playoffs with a best-of-three series against West Linn this week. The series will open with a double-header at West Linn this Friday and, if necessary, a third game will be held at Lake Oswego on Saturday.

“We're just not playing our brand of baseball right now,” Anders said.
